Recent data from the British Bankers Association indicates that the current "older generation" is far from being left behind in this increasingly technological age, with nearly 2.3 million people aged over 70 using internet banking and 450,000 using banking apps on smart devices. It's been around 30 years since computing really broke into schools and, based on that, it would be fair to expect that the leading edge of a tech-comfortable surge in the population would be with those around 40-45 years old today. If this was the case, then we would be looking at maintaining legacy banking services for another 40+ years. Research from Adaptive Lab claims that banking apps are falling short in both user experience and functionality, but such an assessment is entirely dependent on context. What these figures from the BBA seem to show is that the current providers of consumer banking technology seem to be getting it right when it comes to delivering an appropriate user experience for a broad demographic including both young and old. An uptake in online banking services is always to be expected as people are drawn to online banking primarily for convenience, but that 450,000 over 70s using smartphone and tablet apps to do at least some of their banking today is an encouraging sign for an inclusive future with technology in payments.
