Dec 2009 - Maybe this year

It’s the time of year when forecasters start making predictions for the year ahead.  It’s probably pretty safe to assume England will go out of the World Cup on penalties, the recession will last longer in the UK than other Western countries and it will not be a BBQ Summer.

But it might just be the year that we see some significant green shoots in the payment industry.  We know cheques will continue to decline even if cash doesn’t and according to Gartner, in late 2010, NFC-enabled phones will begin to ship in volume, with Asia leading deployments, followed by Europe and North America.  Add to this the fact that Apple is looking into contactless for the next generation of iPhone and the mobile world may start to finally show signs of life in 2010.  Mobile contactless applications could open a range of new services in payment to consumers - and as for England in the World Cup well, you never know!

We hope you have a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
